Radon is a naturally occurring ground gas found in elevated concentrations in many areas across the UK. It is the second largest cause of lung cancer in the general population, after smoking.

Currently the UK uses an indoor guideline Action Level of 200 Bq/m3. However, the WHO proposes an Action Level of 100 Bq/m3 for residential buildings to minimize health hazards due to indoor radon exposure. In addition to this the WHO state that there is convincing evidence of an association between indoor radon exposure and lung cancer, even at the relatively low radon levels commonly found in residential buildings. This could have significant implications for the UK and implies that the cause of radon exposure is a design fault in our homes and workplaces.
For this reason it is very important we do our very best to limit and reduce Radon Exposure. Concentrations can vary significantly in confined spaces such as houses and offices and many factors are involved. Therefore the measurement and assessment of Radon risk is an important step to affording appropriate protection to the places we live and work.

GGS provides a professional and discrete monitoring and assessment service to help reduce radon exposure in both existing and new homes or workplaces.
We are able to carry out 7 day short-term measurements to provide a fast indication of radon exposure. However we recommend that longer term monitoring of 90 days is completed to provide a more reliable assessment of average annual exposure.
Addressing radon is important both in construction of new buildings and in existing buildings. GGS can carry out the necessary investigation and risk assessment and provide professional mitigation and remediation advice.
If you are responsible for the management of commercial or public buildings, GGS can also assist in fulfilling your duties under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999.
